Made of Many

These quilt squares are adapted from quilt patterns I associate with memories of my family, based on the names and visual qualities of traditional quilt patterns. The shift through the colour spectrum refers to transition, beauty, and our connections to our surroundings. The variety of fabric materials and textures are used to express the many facets that make up an individual, as well as the care and consideration that goes into creating an object of comfort. The loose threads and unfinished edges speak to potential connections and room for change and growth.

The process of making a quilt is both constructive and deconstructive. It is repetitive, breaking down complex patterns and forms into pieces and transforming and combining “many” into “one.” Quilting has been an exercise in caring for myself and my wellbeing, allowing me to reflect on my personal experiences and family connections. Incorporating quilting into printmaking expands this meditative process and strengthens my consideration and response to the materials. The stages of sewing, quilting, and meticulously inking and printing create a strong understanding of the physical materials and their ability to embody emotions and memories. By making collagraph prints using quilt squares, the emotional value, comfort, and empathy I associate with quilts are captured in the impression of ink on paper. This acts as a record of the moment, as well as the time, labour, and internal reflection that went into its creation.

There are two versions of this series: one done in full colour with a combination of intaglio and relief printing, and one in monotone black with just intaglio.
